Its more than just a drink, its also a Magic Town (Puebla Magica) in Mexico. A easy day trip from Guadalajara we opted out of the “package” tour to visit the main distillery and got our own driver to take us to Tequila for the day. This gave us the flexibility to go where ever we chose and not get “railroaded” into the tourist traps of the big boys in the tequila industry.
Our first stop was Tres Mujers (three women) a smaller boutique tequila distillery where we could see the process from growing the agave, harvesting, baking/cooking, distilling and finally ageing in their underground tunnel. We found their tequila to our liking and brought two bottles.
We drove into the Tequila town square and explored on foot from there. Tequila (the drink) is big business and some of the distilleries were MASSIVE!. One interesting thing to check out is the tequila museum, we found it really informative.
Tequila is like whiskey in that the cheap stuff is rough and hard to drink, but the good quality tequila is smooth and really enjoyable. We had discovered this on our previous trips to Mexico. We would recommend everyone try a good quality tequila before discounting the spirit as disgusting.
Now what is this stuff called Mescal?……..
