Central Michoacan – Avocados, Guitars, and a Buried Church

Heading towards the Pacific coast from Morelia we stopped in the town of Uruapan for one night. This is the area where 45% of the worlds avocados are grown. We camped in a hotel carpark where we could use the pool and spent the evening wandering through the avocado orchards.

In Mexico there are many towns that specialise in making/crafting one thing. There is a copper town, silver town, wood working town, salt town and many more. Just up the road was Paracho a guitar making town! We drove in and got our morning jugo verde (green juice/smoothie) then wandered around the town and market. There were many Taller de Guitarras (guitar workshops) making every kind of guitar you could think of. We ended up finding a nice wee ukulele and got the man who made it to sign it for us. Now we have to learn how to play the thing!!

We heard about a place nearby that has a church which is buried in an old lava flow. In the 1940s a volcano rapidly formed in a corn field nearby (120m high after 7 days!) and when it erupted the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro was completely buried by the lava flow. Wikipedia search it, as it is a fascinating story. The only remaining part of the town was the church which is still sticking out of the lava. We got a local guide – 10 year old Romano who showed us the way and sights, nature is truly impressive! After camping in the local pine forrest, we hit the road for the Michoacan coast the next day.
